A Hudson Valley Regional Airport employee has confirmed that a small plane crashed near the airport Friday.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was approaching Runway 24 at the airport when it crashed less than a mile away from it around 2:30 p.m.
According to FlightAware, the plane is registered to a company in Akron, Ohio. It took off from Akron before 1 p.m. Friday. Officials say the plane was headed for Rhode Island.
Police say the plane crashed near the New Hackensack Plaza at 1820 New Hackensack Road and the Village Crest Apartments at 510 Maloney Road.
The four people aboard the plane all survived the crash. Three passengers, a 60-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital. The pilot, a 60-year-old woman, has the most serious injuries and was flown to Westchester Medicinal Center in critical condition.
A sheriff’s spokesperson says the small plane was trying to make an emergency landing at Hudson Valley Regional Airport after the pilot said the plane was running out of fuel. Instead, it crashed into a wooded area nearby the airport as it was coming in for landing.
