Several explosions and a massive fire severely damaged the Sprainbrook Nursery in Greenburgh Sunday night.
Fire officials say a fire in a rear building started around 10 p.m. yesterday. They say the building stored about eight 50-pound propane tanks.
Several different companies were called in to help, and emergency vehicles packed Spain and Underhill roads as crews worked the scene. Firefighters worked hard to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. "The propane tanks were the main issue and that created an exposure to some of the houses on Deerhill Lane, but we were able to handle that," says Greenville Chief Daniel Rafery.
It took about 30 firefighters 45 minutes to get the flames under control, but they had a lot of flare ups and hot spots to deal with.
Chief Rafery says they were lucky the explosions happened in an open area. There were no injuries. There is no word yet on how the fire started.
