The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is taking child asthma patients to Camp Spinnaker in New Hampshire to bring them away from the city and into the great outdoors.
This is the fourth year that this program has been run in collaboration with the nonprofit Zebra Crossings. It’s a free opportunity that is back for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year families were able to join the kids as well.
“We’ll be doing an hour a day of asthma teaching, we’ll also be watching the kids take their medicine as they learn how to take their pumps independently and get that confidence in asthma self-management,” said Dr. Karen Warman, attending physician and Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.
Warman reminds everyone that the camp is still 95% fun, with plenty of adventure and outdoor activities.
Montefiore counselors and parents alike say this experience is truly a bonding moment for them, as they learn that their asthma doesn’t stop them from living their everyday life.
