A former Spring Valley village trustee has begun serving his one-year jail sentence for stealing funds from a village-funded summer camp program for children.
Vilair Fonvil, 58, had been convicted in 2018, but he had not been serving it while he appealed his conviction.
Last April, a state appellate court upheld the conviction.
On Tuesday, he began serving his sentence at the Rockland County Jail.
Fonvil was also sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to pay over $11,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say that's the amount of money he stole from the program.
