A former Westchester County Jail guard was sentenced to six years in prison Monday.
The case against Paul Cote dates back to 2000, when prosecutors say the ex-corrections officer brutally beat a homeless inmate. Zoran Teodorovic, 46, died more than a year later from trauma to the brain.
The original conviction in the case against Cote was overturned, but later reinstated by Judge Sonia Sotomayor, now President Obama's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court.
During Cote's sentencing Monday, Judge Kenneth Karas said Cote was responsible for Teodorovic's death because he used excessive force.
