Jay Savino, the former chairman of the Bronx Republican party, will not have to serve any prison time for his role in the political scheme to get former state Sen. Malcolm Smith on the ballot for New York City mayor.
Savino could've received up to a 30-year prison sentence for his role in the Corridor of Corruption scandal but instead left the courthouse a virtual free man.
"I love my wife and my kids and I can't wait to see them," said Savino
The former Bronx GOP chairman was sentenced to time served and two years of supervised probation after testifying for prosecutors in two federal corruption trials against his co-defendants. Savino also admitted to taking $15,000 in bribes to help Smith get the Republican nomination for mayor.
While sentencing Savino, the judge agreed with federal prosecutors that Savino's testimony provided an invaluable inside look into the corruption probe that included Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret. Jasmin and Desmaret were convicted and are serving time for getting paid off in return for their support of a catering hall in Spring Valley.
