Thanks to Tropical Storm Ernesto, two beaches were closed on the last big holiday weekend of the summer season. Glen Island Beach and the beach at Rye Playland were both off limits to sunbathers. The storm eroded sand up to the boardwalk and debris was strewn all over Glenn Island Beach in New Rochelle. Park officials say the beach is still without power. Ernesto also wreaked havoc at Rye Playland Beach, forcing officials to end the beach season one day early. The amusement park was closed for two days because of the storm. It reopened Monday just in time to salvage the unofficial last day of summer.
