Putnam County's district attorney kicked off his re-election campaign Friday as critics called for his resignation over his alleged mishandling of a case.
Adam Levy announced he's seeking a third term on the steps of the county courthouse.
Critics, like primary opponent and Putnam Valley Supervisor Bob Tendy, accuse Levy of overstepping his authority in trying to protect his friend, Alexandru Hossu, from 2013 child rape charges.
Levy has also butted heads with Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith.
Levy sued Smith for defamation when the sheriff accused the DA of trying to influence the Hossu investigation.
Tendy tells News 12 that there is no working relationship between the two law enforcement offices.
Levy denies that, saying that the district attorney must put politics aside as part of the job.
Standing in support of the embattled DA is TV's "Judge Judy" Scheindlan -- his mother.
