The mother of an Eastchester High School student says her daughter got detention for participating in National Walkout Day Wednesday.

Michelle Mancini says her 17-year-old daughter, Victoria, decided to join hundreds of her classmates in Wednesday's walkout to remember the lives lost in Parkland, Florida.

Mancini says she expected the school district to support the march, or at least not be against it.

Victoria Mancini says the school principal met with students the day before the protest and told them he wanted them to make their voices heard, but then said he had to put his principal cap on, which meant detention.

Mancini received a letter from the principal stating that if they did participate, there would be penalties that the students would have to face. This included a 45-minute detention after school for students like Victoria Mancini, who in her four-year high school term has never even come close to getting in trouble.

Victoria Mancini may not have to show up because Gov. Andrew Cuomo is now calling for school districts statewide to overturn any type of discipline, saying schools are "sending a terrible message to New York's children."

In a statement, the superintendent of Eastchester schools did not address the detention, but said he fully respects the rights of students to exercise their First Amendment rights.
