The East Ramapo school district was back in court Wednesday in its fight with the NAACP.
The fight over how voters in the district choose its school board made its way to the federal Court of Appeals.
Lawyers for the district are appealing the ruling lost to the NAACP. In that case, a judge ruled that under the current system, minorities are discriminated against because even though the district is majority Black and brown, the majority of the school board is made up of Jewish members whose children don't go to district schools.
The judgement demanded the district create a ward or neighborhood-based system when selecting the school board in order to increase the participation of minorities in school board voting.
Charlie Damron, the lawyer representing the NAACP, suggested the case was all about race and that there was no way to avoid it.
It could take months before the court of appeals rules.
