More than a dozen cats are now recovering after being rescued from a hoarding situation in Dover.

The Dutchess County SPCA says it was called to an abandoned trailer last week. The animals were suffering from different degrees of dehydration and emaciation with fleas, infections and injuries.

The group says it is still working to catch at least a dozen more.

"We are optimistic that we will be able to save them and bring them back to health and then find them loving homes that they deserve after they've been through this ordeal," says Dutchess County SPCA Executive Director Lynne Meloccaro.

The cats they were able to capture are recovering at the county's SPCA facility in Hyde Park. They say the rescued felines will not be healthy enough to adopt for a few weeks, so they're also urging people to adopt other cats that are available now to make room for the cats that are recovering.

To nurse the cats back to health, the SPCA says it's going to take thousands of dollars. It is asking for donations to pay for the animals’ medical expenses.
