A Dutchess County man is hoping to preserve a public park and turn it into living, breathing, art for his community.

Red Hook resident Andres San Millan, who works in the City of Poughkeepsie is an artist who has his eyes on Wheaton Park.

He wants an area in the 2.2-acre park to be for public art, as well as a 900-foot long raised loop that wraps around the 150-year-old house known as Pelton Mansion, for people to take in. He's proposing this idea instead of the park turning into residential apartments, which were approved several years ago by the city’s Common Council.

Nothing has happened yet because the property has been in limbo ever since.

"Somebody in my group, Jamie said, Poughkeepsie is a city of bridges, not of walls. This would be a third bridge. Perhaps it would give Poughkeepsie the image in the Hudson Valley of the city that welcomes people that welcomes ideas. that welcomes progress,” he says.

If it were to come to fruition, San Milan estimates it would cost around $5 million, which would be paid for with grants and donors who want to see the vision come to fruition.

Currently, there is a Change.org petition that has a few hundred signatures to save Wheaton Park.
