Drivers are being urged to be extra careful as students in the Hudson Valley head back to school.

Police across the Hudson Valley are supporting AAA's "School's Open - Drive Carefully" campaign.

It reminds drivers to be aware of children getting on and off buses, and asks people to drive safely in school zones.

Police say children can dart out anywhere, and kids just back from vacation may be less careful.

In Yonkers, Mayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner Charles Gardner were at the school bus stop at Yonkers Avenue and Prescott Street on Wednesday warning people that there will be extra traffic enforcement on the road this week.

They say the leading cause of death for children ages 4-15 is motor vehicle crashes, and police say they will have a zero tolerance policy for drivers who break the law. That especially goes for those who don't stop when school bus lights are flashing.

"Know if you do pass a school bus that we have an excellent police department set out in different spots across the city, and they will issue a summons," says Spano.
