Police are searching for the driver who struck a 4-year-old girl in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday afternoon in the Longwood section of the Bronx.

According to the NYPD, the child was crossing the street in front of 1075 Longfellow Ave. around 4 p.m. when she was struck by a gray Jeep traveling westbound on Longfellow Avenue. Police said the driver fled the scene, continuing westbound on Longfellow Avenue.

The girl was taken to the hospital with a broken right leg and injury to her head. Police said she remains in stable condition.

Witnesses told News 12 they saw the gray Jeep speeding down Longfellow Avenue before it struck the child. One witness said the impact sent the girl into the air.

The crash happened just steps from a neighborhood playground, where residents say children are frequently outside.

Maria Canela, who lives in an apartment overlooking the scene, said she heard the collision from inside her home.

"I heard a big noise, like a boom. That's what I heard because I live on the floor, my window is right here. So, when the cops were right here, they said they hit somebody," Canela said.

The NYPD released an image of the person wanted for questioning in connection with the collision and is asking for the public's help in identifying the driver.

Neighbors told News 12 that speeding has been a longstanding concern on Longfellow Avenue and are urging city officials to install stop signs and speed bumps to improve safety.

News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Transportation to ask whether it is aware of residents' concerns. The agency had not responded as of Friday at 6 p.m.
