A man is in serious condition after police say he fell asleep at the wheel, eventually became airborne and crashed Sunday in Purchase.
Authorities call it a Christmas miracle that 30-year-old Paul Pedro, of Mount Vernon, is alive after the I-684 accident. Fire officials say Pedro may have fallen asleep at the wheel around 9 a.m., hit a median, overcorrected and became airborne. A witness says the vehicle flew about 10 feet over a fence, landing next to a tree on the bank of the Rye Lake.
Firefighters believe Pedro would have been trapped in the vehicle and died if his vehicle landed in the water.
