News 12 spoke with the organizers behind two donation drives in the Rockland County area for coats and shoes.

State Sen. Bill Weber's second annual coat drive is underway.

They say they collected more than 1,000 pounds in gear last year and hope to surpass that.

The district office in Nanuet has dozens of bags from local drop-off areas.

"Most people are relieved to get this out of their house," said John Mulgrew, the senator's deputy chief of staff. "They've been having a jacket for 10 years, and they haven't worn it. Well, give it to us and we'll find someone who needs it."

People can bring them to the following locations within the state senator's district:

Town halls:

  • Clarkstown

  • Haverstraw

  • Orangetown

  • Ramapo

Libraries:

  • Finkelstein Memorial Library

  • Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library-Garnerville

  • Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library-Haverstraw

  • Nanuet Public Library

  • New City Library

  • Orangeburg Library

  • Pearl River Library

  • West Nyack Library

Items will go to local nonprofits and organizations later this month.

Progressive Foot Care's 17th annual holiday shoe drive is happening now, too. The New City office has shoes piled up. Podiatrist Bruce Pinker estimates about 20,000 pairs of footwear have been collected over the years. They play an important role when temps drop.

"Prevent frostbite and other infections of the feet. Hopefully we don't end up seeing them in the emergency room," said Dr. Pinker. "We do see that a lot. Frostbite and all types of infections."

People can drop them off at the Progressive Foot Care locations at 242 North Main St., in New City, and 95 Church St., Suite 210 in White Plains.

Both collections will continue through Dec. 15.
