In the midst of an opioid addiction crisis, New York lawmakers are trying to bridge the gaps in the system and help those struggling to get help.

Doctors and lawmakers discussed the opioid crisis at the first of a series of statewide hearings by the Senate Joint Task Force on Opioids, Addiction and Overdose Prevention.

In 2017 alone, opioids claimed more than 3,200 lives in New York, according to the state's Health Department. That figure is just over half of the population of Irvington.

The Task Force will hold a hearing in the Hudson Valley on Oct. 3.
