More questions are surrounding the Dobbs Ferry mother accused of using her illness to scam the community.
Last August, Shivonie Deokaran was profiled in newspaper articles saying she had terminal cancer and was given only 18 months to live. Just a few months before that, however, she claimed that her cancer was under control.
Deokaran appeared in testimonial video that News 12 uncovered on YouTube in which she was raving about how juicing fruits and vegetables were helping keep her cancer at bay.
Eric Barret, who's the boyfriend of Deokaran's boyfriend's ex-wife, was the first to raise a red flag when he saw several of her GoFundMe pages and a community spaghetti dinner thrown in her honor.
"The whole thing she was playing on is she had 18 months to live," Barret says. "She had 18 months for three years."
Ardsley police have opened up a criminal investigation to determine if Deokaran was as sick as she claimed when she claimed it or if she was using her illness to scam the community.
Deokaran's last address was on Virginia Avenue in Dobbs Ferry, but when questions started to arise last month, she abruptly moved to Florida. She has not returned News 12's calls for comment.
Deokaran is believed to have pocketed about $60,000 from all of her various fundraisers. Police say they have been trying for weeks to get her medical records, but she has not sent them.
