? The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched divers Friday to examine the wreckage of the US Airways Flight 1549 jet that crashed into the Hudson River Thursday.

The divers inspected the hulk of the jet in the frigid water in attempt to find the flight data recorders, known as, ?black boxes,? which investigators hope will help them determine the exact cause of the crash.

NTSB Spokesperson Kitty Higgins confirmed that both of the plane?s engines went missing after detaching on impact. Army Corp. of Engineers and police divers are using sonar equipment to locate the engines.

The team plans to hoist the plane out of the water Saturday and examine it more closely on land. It is at that time they hope to recover the ?black boxes.?

Higgins says investigators are working to determine whether the crash resulted from a collision with a flock of geese. According to preliminary data, the birds struck the plane at around 3:30 p.m., less than a minute after takeoff.

The pilot, Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III of Danville, Calif., reported a "double bird strike" to an air traffic controller in Westbury. According to a person briefed on Sullenberger?s radio communications, the pilot considered emergency landings at LaGuardia and Titerboro airports, but twice told air controllers he was unable to make them, then said he would land in the river instead.

All 155 people on Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, N.C. survived the crash, with Gov. David Paterson calling the incident "a miracle on the Hudson."
