Emergency vehicles rushed to North Salem Middle-High School Wednesday during a mock drill to check the skills of first responders.
Smoke machines signaled the supposed boiler explosion and gas leak used as the scenario for the exercise.
Students were moved to a soccer field near the school while emergency workers moved in to treat the students and teachers pretending to be victims of the disaster.
The drill was test of emergency response, including the use of a helicopter from Stat Flight that landed behind the school to pick up the injured. School Superintendent Sidney Freund says just about everything seemed to go as planned. The drill tested a plan that everyone hopes they never have to use. Planning for the drill began last fall. Earlier this year, a notice was sent to town residents alerting them such a drill would take place. Only a few administrators knew the date and time.
