Demonstrators held up signs outside White Plains City Hall Wednesday to protest the hiring process of a new deputy commissioner of public safety.

The Rev. Doris Dalton and others say they want some input on who that new hire is.

She says they are looking for a candidate with experience in community relationships, community policing and accountability and transparency.

The city's Common Council approved the position, which was eliminated about six years ago because of budget constraints.

"With all the events going on in the world right now, just the title alone enables this department to open a lot of doors," says Commissioner David Chong, the person in charge of making the appointment.

Chong says he has some top internal and external candidates in mind for the position. He says he needs some help administratively and will make a decision in January.

The position is expected to take effect sometime in January.
