Demolition of a partially collapsed building in downtown Yonkers continues, with crews facing the delicate task of removing debris while protecting the Saw Mill River that flows beneath the site.
The collapse occurred on June 21, at approximately 10:45 a.m., when the lower foundation wall of the building at 9 North Broadway suddenly gave way. Portions of the first-floor wall and floor then collapsed into the basement.
The incident occurred inside the building, preventing any debris from falling into the busy downtown area, which is frequented by pedestrians and vehicles. Two individuals – a 65-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman – were inside the building on the third floor at the time and required rescue. Both have since been treated and released from the hospital.
Crews have been working on the site for the past two weeks, carefully removing debris while ensuring the safety of the surrounding area and the Saw Mill River. Some debris entered the river during the initial collapse, and crews are taking extra precautions to avoid further disruption to the river's flow.
North Broadway will remain closed until Wednesday as crews continue their work.
