Demolition has begun on a portion of the former state police barracks in Tarrytown.
The former Troop T state trooper barracks, along with the bridge maintenance facility, have shared the space at 333 South Broadway since the original Tappan Zee Bridge was built in the 1950s.
A section of the building is now being removed to make way for a construction staging area and, eventually, it's where one the approaches will be to the new $3.9 billion bridge.
In the meantime, the State Police and bridge maintenance teams have moved to a temporary spot near exit 12 in West Nyack.
The plan is for the Thruway maintenance team to return to Tarrytown to a permanent facility on the north side of the roadway. Troop T will also return to Tarrytown, to a new state-of-the-art barracks on the south side of the Thruway in 2018.
Thruway authority officials say the rest of the state trooper building will come down this summer.
