A political newcomer is looking to replace an incumbent Democrat for the 90th District Assembly seat in Yonkers.
Michael Sweeney, an attorney and former journalist, is looking to oust Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, who is seeking her second full term in office. The 90th District covers most of Yonkers.
Mayer tells News 12 Westchester that she is campaigning on her record and experience in being an advocate for working families. She says she wants to accomplish more in Yonkers with another term, having already brought money to Yonkers public schools.
Sweeney says he wants to make Yonkers a better place while bringing more business into the city. "We have to work to create an environment that's attractive to businesses, and Yonkers has a lot to offer," says Sweeney.
No Republican is running in the race. Mayer was also nominated by the Working Families and Independence parties and will be on the ballot in November.
