A pair of Muslim-run food pantries in The Bronx are at risk of closing by the end of the month, with massive debt making it difficult to keep the non-profits afloat. Operated by the Muslim Women's Initiative for Research and Development, or MWIRD, the two pantries are located in Highbridge and Parkchester. Officials say they are $50,000 in debt and cannot afford enough provisions to feed the borough's needy residents. "Our rent for our office space is in arrears, four months in arrears," says MWIRD Executive Director Nurah Amat'Ullah. "We have disconnect notices for utilities." The pantries have been in business since 1997.
