A man accused in a Yonkers fatal hit-and-run accident was arraigned in Yonkers City Court.
The accident happened Friday morning and it took about a day for Yonkers police to track down the driver who was allegedly involved and make an arrest.
Police say Joseph Dimitri Delgado, 24, of Yonkers was driving a red Jeep Grand Cherokee down Executive Boulevard just after 9:30 a.m. Friday.
At that same time 78-year-old Azhar Jamil Said was crossing the busy roadway. Investigators say that's when Delgado struck the man then drove off. Said suffered blunt force trauma to his body and was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.
Police were able to interview several witnesses to the accident. In addition, the unveiled AWARE Crime Control Center in Yonkers was a help. The system receives real-time video from the city's network of safety cameras. Investigators say within minutes of the accident, they were able to identify the vehicle and get information that helped them track Delgado to a hotel in Elmsford where he was arrested.
Police say he does not have a driver's license and his driving privileges in New York are suspended due to prior violations.
Delgado is facing a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.
Even though the area has sidewalks and crosswalks, Executive Boulevard is a busy road.
"This is a tragic accident; we want people to be safe. Our main goal is to have our drivers and our pedestrians be safe. So, make sure you're looking where you are going, everyone has a responsibility here,” says Yonkers Det. Sgt. Frank Didomizio.
