An alert clerk at a CVS Pharmacy in New City helped to prevent a customer from becoming the victim of a scam.
The clerk became suspicious when the customer wanted to buy $2,500 in Green Dot money cards. The unidentified customer said she was asked to come up with the money by someone from the IRS.
Clarkstown police say the clerk notified the store's manager. "They had the victim call the supposed IRS agent back, and at which time that person hung up the phone. The manager realized it was in fact a scam and called police," says Clarkstown Police Officer Peter Walker.
A spokesman for CVS tells News 12 the company urges customers to refuse any offers that ask them to buy pre-paid cards.
