Hundreds of emergency workers took part in an emergency drill at Indian Point Tuesday, but not everyone sees the exercise as a useful tool.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Homeland Security oversaw the drill, which simulated a large-scale radiation release. Emergency workers from Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam were tested on what to do when radioactive water is detected in cooling water at Indian Point 2. A spokesman for Entergy, the owner of Indian Point, says the drill really tests communication between all groups involved. He says that is what makes the drill a worthwhile exercise.
However, critics such as Riverkeeper, say the same scenarios are constantly repeated each time there is a drill. The group says emergency workers become so familiar with what to do that it makes the exercise ineffective.
Indian Point is mandated to conduct a drill every two years. This is the first time a drill has been held at the state's Transportation Management Center in Hawthorne.
