More details have emerged about the Mount Vernon Fire Department after a longtime firefighter, who is also the mayor's brother, pleaded guilty to gun trafficking charges and resigned.

A criminal complaint against former Mount Vernon firefighter Henry George Thomas was unsealed this week, and prosecutors have outlined where he allegedly had secret meetings to exchange guns for cash.

According to the criminal complaint, prosecutors captured the 45-year-old on surveillance video and audio tapes meeting with a confidential source to sell guns for cash on the streets of the city last February. Thomas admits the practice went on for five years. It took place at the Mount Vernon Fire Department headquarters, which is just feet from an elementary school and church.

Thomas is the brother of Mayor Richard Thomas, who said he was not aware of his brother's alleged criminal activity.

Public Safety Commissioner Bob Kelly says that Mayor Thomas told him to follow the city charter, which included suspension and possible termination. However, Henry George Thomas, who has two prior convictions, avoided that by leaving on his own.
