The city of Yonkers is taking steps to keep residents safe after recent outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease.
A crew from Sound Water Treatment Center in New Rochelle was at the Grinton Will Public Library on Central Avenue in Yonkers Wednesday to sterilize the building's cooling towers.
The crews say they used a chlorine-like substance to clear any bacteria from every nook and cranny of the cooling tower that regulates the library's air conditioning. Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires' disease, is often found in water systems.
After cleaning the library, the crew moved to the Yonkers Animal Shelter on Ridge Hill Avenue. The cooling tower at the Hudson River Museum is also scheduled to be tested and sanitized.
Last week, Riverside High School in Yonkers tested positive for legionella bacteria.
