One of Rockland County's areas hit hardest by the coronavirus now has a new testing site designed to make it easier for people to get checked for COVID-19.
The new state-run, walk-in testing site has opened in the middle of Haverstraw, next to the community center.
The spot on West Broad Street was chosen because the areas in and around Haverstraw, including West Haverstraw and Garnerville, have seen a large number of coronavirus cases.
These communities have a lot of multifamily dwellings, with shared common areas, so it's easy for the virus to spread.
According to the state Health Department, Rockland County has seen more than 11,000 cases of COVID-19 and close to 400 have lost their lives.
A state-run testing site already opened at Anthony Wayne Park in Bear Mountain, but Rockland County officials say they wanted another location that was more accessible.
"You have to have a car to get to Anthony Wayne Park, and the fact of the matter is, everybody doesn't have cars. And when we see the spike in the amount of cases we have, we want to make sure they're being serviced. It's only the right thing to do," says Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
The testing site will be open every weekday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The location is a walk-in site that requires an appointment. Appointments can be made by calling the New York State Department of Health at 1-888-364-3065. Some form of identification must be provided at the time of the appointment.
