Orange County is urging the Town of Monroe Board not to adopt some controversial zoning changes.

While Monroe leaders want to tighten restrictions on mother-daughter apartments in single-family homes, they also want to loosen zoning laws for hotels.

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus released a critical analysis of the changes and wants the town to delay its vote until a new board takes office in less than two weeks.

While the county can't stop the zoning amendments from being voted on, its disapproval means a supermajority of the Town Board members must pass the changes, rather than the standard simple majority. This means four out of five board members must approve the measures as opposed to three out of five.
