The season of the beach is coming to an end. Before you know it, the season of books and backpacks will begin. Circana’s chief retail analyst is schooling us on supply spending so we can set aside the right amount for the tools our students need.
“Smart shoppers are going to shop early but also wait for some of these items to go on sale,” said Marshal Cohen.
Beginning with the basics, you are already eating into our budgets. According to Cohen, lunch boxes can range from $5.99 up to $45 for ones that come insulated.
The items that are meant to carry your child through the entire year often carry a hefty price tag and backpacks are no exception.
“You can get backpacks for as little as $12.99,” said Cohen. “Fifteen dollars for a Disney backpack all the way up to $70 for a SWISSGEAR, [which is] a much more durable, rugged backpack.”
The supplies you are packing your bags with are also seeing some increases. According to Cohen, folders are up a nickel over last year and composition notebooks have climbed by about 10 cents.
For the best savings he recommends buying in bulk, tracking sales and turning to store brands when and where you can.
