Residents and elected officials in Cortlandt continue their fight against a proposed pipeline that they say is potentially dangerous.
The proposed pipeline would run under the Hudson River and come close to the Indian Point nuclear plant.
Elected officials at Cortlandt Town Hall filed a request Thursday for a rehearing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
FERC approved the controversial natural gas pipeline last month. Under the plan, Spectra Energy will replace 20 miles of pipeline running from Rockland to Westchester and into New England with a new one that is nearly twice as large in diameter.
Residents have concerns over the environmental and health concerns of the project, which would replace what is known as the Algonquin Pipeline.
Opponents object to its size and where the new pipeline will be rerouted. The new pipeline will also run near the Buchanan Elementary School, just 450 feet away.
Buchanan Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker says there is no evacuation plan in case of a potential disaster.
