Police uncovered an illegal pit bull fighting ring at an abandoned Yonkers home Saturday.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Westchester County and Yonkers police received a tip about the house Saturday morning. Officials discovered two caged, emaciated dogs when they arrived at the Saint Joseph Avenue home off Ashburton Avenue. SPCA representatives said the two females, which are currently pregnant, are likely used to breed fighting dogs. The two dogs were brought to an emergency animal hospital where they are now recovering.
The SPCA said heavy chains and steroid syringes, both used to strengthen pit bulls, were found at the abandoned home. According to police, evidence suggests at one point more than 15 dogs were involved in the fighting ring. Police do not have any suspects, but said the culprits would face several felonies, if caught. Anyone with information is asked to call the Yonkers Police Department at 377-7305.
