A woman is dead after a two-car accident in White Plains this morning.
Police say off-duty firefighter Erik Refvik, 34, was driving the wrong way on South Lexington near the Galleria Mall when he crashed into a car at the intersection of Martine Avenue. The incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. Investigators say Refvik's SUV wound up in the lobby of an adjacent residential building after the collision.
The other car was carrying a couple who was delivering papers. The passenger, Reyda LaMadrid, 47, of Harrison, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's driver, Edgar Lopez, 49, was taken to Westchester Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
Police say Refvik, a four-year veteran of the White Plains Fire Department, was also taken to Westchester Medical Center with cuts and injuries to his face. Investigators say his blood alcohol content was .145, which is nearly twice the legal limit. He was arraigned at his bedside and charged with criminally negligent homicide and DWI.
Refvik has been suspended without pay.
