A man remains in critical condition Sunday after police say a drunken driver caused a massive crash that flipped over an SUV.
Police say 21-year-old Paul DeBerry, of Greenburgh, was returning from partying in Manhattan with a friend when he rear-ended a Land Rover around 5 a.m. on the Sprain Brook Parkway. Police say DeBerry was traveling at a high rate of speed, forcing the Land Rover to flip over.
DeBerry is charged with DWI, vehicular assault and other traffic infractions. Neither DeBerry or his passenger, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, were seriously injured.
Darrin White, of Poughkeepsie, was rushed to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition. The 42-year-old's wife, 39-year-old Tomisha Thomas-White, was not seriously injured in the collision.
White's cousin, who works with him at a juvenile detention center, says the family is trying to cope, and that the suspect is also in their thoughts.
"We want to continue to keep him and his family also in our prayers for the fact of what they're going through also," says Mike Dickerson.
The Sprain Brook Parkway reopened around 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call them at 914-769-2600.
