Cop in Perez case linked to '05 brutality claim
Facts about a 2005 case have emerged about the Mount Kisco police officer indicted in the death of an immigrant.
George Bubaris was reportedly named in a police brutality case involving two teenagers in the Bronx when he worked for the NYPD. The case was settled out of court for $40,000. A civilian complaint review board found no wrongdoing
Bubaris is out on bail after being charged with manslaughter in the death of Rene Perez. Bubaris and two other officers encountered Perez at a Mount Kisco Laundromat following a 911 call, which was made by Perez, on April 28.
Hispanic activist Fernando Mateo is troubled by the latest revelation concerning Bubaris. ?The records of that police officer should follow him. And the community that's bringing him in should know who this officer is,? Mateo said.
Bubaris? attorney, Edward Hayes, said he is not concerned about the 2005 case. ?George Bubaris was one of 11 different people sued. These cases are regularly settled for their nuisance value," Hayes said. Mount Kisco's Acting Police Chief, Steven Anderson, said Bubaris is still employed by the department and personnel records are confidential. However, Anderson said background checks are routinely conducted before an officer is hired.
