Students in New Rochelle are worried about their safety while crossing the street as the first week of school wraps up.
Students like Javier Hernandez say drivers speed and don't pay attention so it can be dangerous to cross the street. That's why some school officials believe there should be more crossing guards in the area near New Rochelle High School and The Holy Family School.
"We think crossing guards would be an excellent idea," says Veronica Jarek-Prinz, associate superintendent, Archdiocese of New York.
Parents and students are worried about safety, but the city of New Rochelle has provided almost no crossing guards.
School officials say more eyes on the students would make the area safer.
According to a spokesperson for the New Rochelle School District, the city's Transportation Department is in charge of crossing guards and they have not received any complaints. City officials say safety is a top priority and they will take every complaint they hear seriously.
