Con Edison and Orange & Rockland Utilities have been fined $10.75 million as a result of their responses to the back-to-back 2018 nor'easter storms.
The storms in March 2018 were only four days apart and resulted in a ton of damage.
More than 293,000 homes experienced power outages.
The Public Service Commission announced Thursday that it’s the utility companies' responsibility to be prepared for storms, as well as keep customers informed. The companies are also tasked with restoring power as safely and quickly as possible.
Con Edison and O&R admitted to five violations of their own emergency response plans, according to state Assemblyman David Buchwald. He also says the companies could be fined for their performances following Tropical Storm Isaias.
“The failures in 2020 are going to be subject to fines as well, and I hope also for real improvements because every area resident doesn't just want the company to be fined. They want the company to perform better the next time,” says Buchwald.
Con Edison and Orange & Rockland Utilities responded to News 12. They said in part, "We examined our performance following storms Riley and Quinn and looked for ways to improve. We then took numerous steps to protect our customers and equipment, enhance restoration processes, and improve our information systems."
The state Senate and Assembly will be holding a hearing on Aug. 20 to evaluate their performance.
