Concerned residents and town leaders are urging the state Department of Transportation to address safety concerns on a hazardous stretch of road in Greenburgh.
The area in question is the intersection of I-87, the Saw Mill Parkway South, and Mountain Road, where drivers often fail to obey the stop sign and speed onto the parkway. The tight turn onto Mountain Road from the parkway also poses a risk.
"What we're trying to do is get the state to hire an independent traffic consultant who would take a look at the safety issues and come up with recommendations," said Town of Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner.
Proposed solutions include installing a traffic light or adding more signage to alert drivers to the presence of Mountain Road. Over three dozen letters have been sent to the town supervisor, expressing dire concerns about the safety of this busy stretch of road.
The New York State Department of Transportation sent News 12 a statement saying they have “reviewed the Saw Mill River Parkway, Interstate 87 and Mountain Road interchange multiple times – most recently in early 2024 – and has implemented enhancements, including modified road signing. Safety is always the top priority of the New York State Department of Transportation and the department will continue to monitor conditions at the interchange and keep open lines of communication with local officials to address their concerns. However, safety is everyone’s responsibility and we urge motorists to obey the rules of the road, drive responsibly and remain alert.”
