A fire in Dutchess County destroyed a commercial building and thousands of dollars in machinery Thursday.

The flames tore through the 15,000-square-foot building in Poughkeepsie around 5 a.m. as workers started to arrive.

Tom Gleason said his excavation business was destroyed, but he plans to rebuild.

“Eighty years in business. It's a shame,” he says.

The business also rents out space to a boat repair shop.

People sprang into action to move machinery and boats before the fire spread.

The building is a total loss, along with thousands of dollars in heavy machinery and boats inside.

Officials say that no one was hurt in the fire.

Authorities say there were initial concerns of a possible fuel and oil contamination, but News 12 was told that the DEC found that not to be the case.
