Cold weather becomes dangerous for commuters
Health officials across the Hudson Valley are warning people to stay inside as much as possible due to dangerously low temperatures.
Yonkers city officials have declared a "code blue," meaning there are dangerous conditions outside.
Commuters forced to wait for buses and trains are being warned to not expose any skin. With what feels like temperatures in the single digits, it will take less than 30 minutes to be at risk for frostbite.
People are urged to dress in layers of loose fitting clothes and to cover up from head to toe with hats, gloves, and boots.
Inside, home service experts say residents should try to keep the thermostat in your house set between 60 and 70 degrees. They also suggest using pipe insulation in places such as a garage that is more exposed to cold drafts. Also, professionals say residents should know where the main water shut off valve is in the house - in case a pipe does burst..
