Co-op City residents are calling for more police in the area following the rape of a teenage girl last week.
Police arrested convicted rapist Casmine Aska, 29, in the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Co-op City last week. Residents say they are afraid that more crimes will happen if there is no increase in police presence.
Co-op City management posted signs in each building this week stating not to let anyone in the building who residents do not know personally.
Aska allegedly was let into a building on Bellamy Loop even though he does not live there. Tenants tell News 12 it will take more than the signs to stop something like this from happening again.
"People just stand there and wait for you to open the door, they come in right behind you. What is an elderly person going to do? Tell a person, ‘Oh, you can't come in behind me’ or they're not going to come in the building," said Clemens Gerard, Co-op City resident.
Residents say they want to see more action from management to keep residents safe.
In a statement, Co-op City management says police presence has increased since the incident and they will take adding a lobby attendant to the buildings under advisement.
Police are asking for other victims to come forward and to call the NYPD sex crimes hotline at 212-267-7273.
