A clerical coordinator in the pre-natal center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital has died of COVID-19, marking the first death due to the virus among the hospital staff.
Janissa Delacruz, 31, of Haverstraw, is described as vibrant, compassionate and always ready to put a smile on your face. She was known for helping those looking for Spanish translations
Delacruz died on April 6.
In a statement, Montefiore Nyack Hospital says in part, "There are no words that can adequately express our emotions for losing a vibrant and beloved member of our health care team...She will be missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know and work alongside her. We continue to keep her family in our thoughts and prayers."
Veronica Martinez, a coworker and friend of Delacruz, says she was trying to deliver tea to her when she saw an ambulance in front of her home.
The single mother passed away later that evening, leaving behind her 6-year-old son, Gianluis.
A GoFundMe page is raising money for her funeral and her son's future college fund.
Gianluis will be under the care of Delacruz's mother, brother and sister.
