A fire took the life of a 92-year-old woman, and left a family
homeless in Mount Vernon on Tuesday.
Fire officials say they got the call just before 5 p.m.
and when crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house
at 415 East Prospect Avenue.
The fire quickly went to a two-alarm as
emergency crews worked to get everyone out of the house.
News 12 is told this was a tough fire to
fight. In addition to battling the flames and smoke, crews had to contend with
very cold temperatures and water quickly turning surfaces to ice, making for
very slippery conditions.
Despite that, fire officials say first
responders were able to pull four people - three adults and a child out of the
house.
Sadly, a 92-year-old woman located on the second floor died inside the
home.
The victim's name has not yet been released, but
investigators say it looks as though she may have died of heat and smoke
inhalation.
It took about an hour to get the fire under control. At least three firefighters were sent to the hospital with injuries but are expected to be OK. Several other people who were
outside the house are also being treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire officials say conditions inside the house were
dangerous making it hard on crews working to save everyone. "It was just tough to get
into the house with the heavy volume of heat and smoke. Firefighters made a
good push to get to the second floor to try to get to the victim,"
says Mount Vernon Deputy Fire Chief Ricky Montana.
Investigators tell News 12 the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
