New Jersey’s 11th congressional district officially has a new voice in the nation's capital.

Congresswoman Analilia Mejia was sworn into office this week, formally taking the seat previously held by Mikie Sherrill. The transition follows a high-stakes election to fill the vacancy left by Sherrill’s move to the Governor’s mansion in Trenton.

Immediately following her oath of office, congresswoman Mejia delivered a pointed address to her colleagues on the House floor. While acknowledging the local priorities of her North Jersey constituents, she centered her debut speech on national stability.

Mejia called on members of the House to remain steadfast against what she described as growing "threats to democracy and the constitution."

The 11th district, which covers portions of Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties, has seen significant political shifts over the last decade.

Mejia is expected to begin announcing her committee assignments and opening her local district offices in the coming days to begin serving her constituents directly.
