Things are going in the right direction when it comes to extinguishing the wildfire at the New York/New Jersey border, according to first responders. That's especially the case in and around Greenwood Lake.

The smoke may be subsiding in parts of Greenwood Lake but for some, the stress is lingering.

"It's still unsettling to see it" says Greenwood Lake resident Sylvia Hayes.

However, first responders say things are getting better.

Over the last six days, this wildfire has burned through thousands of acres along the New York/New Jersey border.

As of Thursday night, the fire was nearly 70% contained, according to leaders in Greenwood Lake.

"They contained the portion in the village of Greenwood Lake, right on the town border and now, they're going to go over the mountain and attempt to contain that angle," says Greenwood Lake Mayor Thomas Howley.

Mayor Howley says this strategy of containing the fire is working but, it will likely bring more smoke to the area Friday.

First responders say if the smoke gets too strong or unbearable, there is a shelter set up at the American Legion on Mountain Lakes Lane.

As a reminder, there's no school Friday for students in the Greenwood Lake Union Free School District.
