The Vail Chevrolet dealership, which first opened its doors in Harrison 80 years ago, went out of business Thursday just days after General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection.

Bob Vail, the owner of the dealership, says he closed more deals on cars this year than he did last year. However, he thinks it still wasn't good enough for the troubled automaker.

"It seems to come down to GM's idea of how many dealerships it needs to handle business at its current level, and the amount of financing GMAC has available," Vail says.

Henry Zuccarelli, who worked in the auto body division of Vail Chevrolet as a teen, says he is sad to see the dealership shutter its doors.

"A lot of people in our city buy at Vail," he says. "They have to go elsewhere. It's an inconvenience."

Vail Chevrolet employed about two dozen people. Some of the workers say they will transfer to Vail's Bedford dealership, while other says they found employment elsewhere.
