A troublesome rail crossing in Chappaqua is closed as crews make repairs intended to make it safer.

Chappaqua officials say the crossing at Roaring Brook Road will be repaved and have new markings on both sides, new signs and improved lighting. Metro-North is also tearing out two tracks, replacing the ballast and rail ties and will install new bells.

Back in February, six people were killed in a Metro-North crash in Valhalla, which prompted New Castle officials to begin working on getting approval and funds from Albany to build an overpass at the Roaring Brook Road crossing.

Earlier this month, a school bus got caught on the tracks at the Roaring Brook Road crossing when the gates came down on top of it. There was enough clearance for the train to safely pass.

Officials say that train service will not be interrupted, but a half-mile stretch of Roaring Brook Road from the Saw Mill River Parkway exit to near Southview Road will be closed during construction.

Crews say they expect to be at the site until around 7 p.m. today.
